Preschool Group Activities

Preschool group activities are great for so many reasons. Children learn how to play together, communicate, follow rules, take turns, deal with emotions and developing physical skills, while having a blast! The best part, they get those wiggles out.

My little tip
These preschool group activities are also great time fillers when you run out of ideas.

Do you have a great activity idea? Why not share it?

activities

Balloon Bopping
Have the children try to keep a balloon in the air as long as they can. As they bop the balloon you can count or say the alphabet. See how many bops they can do.

Down by the Banks
Down by the banks of the hanky panky
Where the bullfrogs jump from bank to banky
Saying eep ipe ope opp
One jumps in and goes keplop!

Have the children stand in a circle. While singing, have them pass a beach ball around. When they sing the last word, kerplop, have the child holding the ball bounce it and the child that catches it gets start the next round.

Duck, Duck, Goose
Have the children sit in a circle. One child walks around the circle and taps each child on the head calling them duck or goose. When he calls someone a goose, that child runs after him and tries to touch him before he sits down in the open space. If he gets caught, he’s still the goose. If he sits down first, the chosen person is the goose.

Get Creative: try toad, toad, frog; fairy, fairy, princess; pickle, pickle, pizza; or have the children come up with a new one.

Follow The Leader
Chose a leader and the rest of the children line up behind. The leader can do whatever they want and the rest of the children follow. Switch around who is the leader.

Hot Potato
Sit the children in a large circle. Explain that they are pretending the bean bag is a hot potato, too hot to hold. When the music starts they pass the bag around the circle. When the music stops, the person holding the bag is out. The winner is the last one in the group. (click to check out my other fun bean bag games). A classic preschool group activities.

Limbo
Turn on some fun music and line the children up. Hold a pole horizontally and have each child walk under it, then lower the pole. See how low they can go.

London bridge
London Bridge is falling down
falling down, falling down
London Bridge is falling down, my fair lady

Take the key and lock her
(or him) up
lock her up, lock her up
Take the key and lock her up, my fair lady

Have two children hold hands forming a bridge. The other children walk under the bridge as they sing the first verse. When they sing, my fair lady, the two children trap the one walking through. They sing the next verse, while swaying their prisoner back and forth. They let the prisoner go and do it again.

Autumn Leaves are Falling Down
(Sing to the tune of London Bridge)
Autumn leaves are falling down
Falling down, falling down
Autumn leaves are falling down, on the ground

Take a rake and pile them up
Pile them up, pile them up
Take a rake and pile them up, on the ground

Have two children hold hands forming a bridge. The other children walk under the bridge as they sing the first verse. When they sing, on the ground, the two children trap the one walking through. They sing the next verse, while swaying their prisoner back and forth, like they're raking leaves. They let the prisoner go and do it again. A fun twist on a classic preschool group activities.

Mother May I
Have the children stand in a line. Choose a person to be the mother and have her stand in front. Each child takes a turn choosing a step, then asking, “Mother may I take __________ steps?”. The mother then says, “No, you may not,” or “Yes, you may take __________ steps,” and chooses how many they take. All the children do the step forward. The first person to reach the mother wins and becomes the next mother.

Get creative: Try doing bunny hops, monkey steps, dinosaur steps, ballerina leaps or whatever they come up with. You could also change mother to teacher, princess, king, or even Santa.

Mr. Freeze
Chose someone to be Mr. (or Mrs.) Freeze. The other children run around until Mr. Freeze says, “Freeze.” They stay frozen until he says, “Unfreeze." You can also have Mr. Freeze choose an animal everyone will act like.

Popsicle Licking Race
Give each child a popsicle and tell them it's a race to see how fast they can get to the stick by licking.

Relay Racers Preschool Group Activities
There are countless ways you can have a relay race. You can try two-legged races, or have the children touch a wall and run back. Another idea, have a bucket full of balls on one side and an empty bucket on the other. Have the children split into two lines and take turns running the balls to the empty bucket. The first to fill up their bucket wins. There are so many preschool group activities possibilities.

Ring Around the Rosie
Ring around the rosie
A pocket full of posies
Ashes! Ashes! We all fall down!

Get creative: change the end words to; we all jump up, we all say baaah, we all clap hands, we all run around, or let the children come up with what they want to do.

Simon Says
One child is Simon and stands in front. Simon then asks the other children to do whatever he wants. The children only do it when he says, “Simon says.” If the children move when Simon didn’t say, “Simon says,” then they are out. The last person in gets to be Simon.

Get creative: Change Simon to the child’s name, to their favorite animal or cartoon character.

Tightrope Walking
Tape a line on the floor. Have the children walk across the line and try not to fall off. Have them try walking backwards, hopping on one foot or crawling.

Toss Your Toys
You will need a small blanket and a soft toy or stuffed animal. Have each child grab part of the blanket and place the toy in the middle. Then count to three and have everyone toss the toy high in the air. Try catching it in the blanket before it falls.
It is also fun to swing the toy while saying:

One for the money
Two for the show
Three to get ready
and four to go!

Or my variation:
One little monkey
Two hippos
Three Gorillas
and four Geckos!

Water Balloon Towel Toss
If you’re okay with the children getting wet, this is a lot of fun. Pair the children together and give each pair a towel. Place a water balloon in their towel and have them toss the balloon, with their towel, to another pair. See how many times they can catch it without it breaking. A great, outdoor preschool group activities.

Get creative: Using a large towel have each child hold onto it and see how high they can toss a water balloon.

I hope you enjoyed my collection of preschool group activities.
